Many of you may know that I recently wrote a controversial article on Why I am against jailbreaking 2.x - The main reasons being my hatred of cracked apps and their unfair consequences on the respected and relevant developer.

A few days later, I was PMed by a member of iPTF, asking me (not at all politely…) to at least TRY the 2.x jailbreak before I slagged it off. At first, I argued back insisiting that doing so would make me lose all my notes and saved game data - But eventually the member convinced me to try, and I downloaded QuickPwn and tried my luck…

The main reason I done a jailbreak was to try 3 things:

  1. Themes.
  2. Categories.
  3. Intelliscreen.

I’ll go through each one individually now…

Themes

I kind of miss my old Zunda theme (which has now been stolen by RicardoFelix apparently…) but at the same time, the unjailbroken 2.x “theme” was quite nice still with its ‘every icon is the same’ kind-of style. So after I downloaded Winterboard from the more stable Cydia, I downloaded a few themes to try out:

  • Zunda.
  • Illuminous.
  • iPhone 3G.
  • Buuf2.

I also managed to get hold of a GUI theme, known as MobileMe and the background recommended by my good African friend, x6Blues in one of his previous posts here - It’s lovely.

Categories

For you who have seen my Springboard pre-jailbroken, it tends to get to 8/9 pages of apps that I’ve bought LEGALLY… or are free from the App Store - Yeah.. I’m a good boy. Anyway - I needed some sort of organisation to get them all in a place where I can scroll to and there are my favourites! or there are the games! So - Categories came to mind.

I never got into using this in 1.1.x, but that’s because there weren’t enough apps! But now:

Much better!

Intelliscreen

You wouldn’t believe how much I used this in 1.1.x. It is so useful and worth the money - trust me… Anyway, it would be nicer to have on an iPhone, because I’d get internet anywhere so news would update, and mail and so would the weather - But for Calendars - This is ideal for me! Go get a trial license from Cydia and try yourself - You can even skin it.

They’re just a few of the reasons why I jailbroke in the end. Others are things like better stability and Veency. I hate stacks though, because I had to put it in my dock on top of my Mail icon - But then I couldn’t use mail anymore!… So I removed it :)

I also want PocketTouch but I dunno where to get it at the moment!

Anyway, the conclusion is jailbreaking and not jailbreaking each have their own individual benefits - It just depends what you want from your device at the end of the day.

    Can I also get that background somewhere?

    A google on the name x6Blues didn’t show right results only a hate group……

    Anyhow please let me know if I can get the background too!

    I also would like to compliment you on the good posts and the cleanness of your blog!

    Keep up the good work!

    So, when are you releasing schoolkit? Homework just came out in the appstore, and I’m leaning towards getting it, could you please let me know when schoolkit will be available so that I can decide whether to wait or to buy homework?
    Thanks

    @Pepijn
    The background is called Illuminated

    You can find it on Cydia, and it changes every 3 hours to match the time of day!

    @Laser
    If you want an “assignment tracker,” I’d recommend the free “iProcrastinate” app for the time being. That’s all Homework is.

    As for SchoolKit, we’re currently working on the website and almost finished the first part of the app.

    I can’t promise a release date… But I’d say sometime in November, edging into early December.

    Thanks for showing interest.

    Thank you. :)

    @Pepijn
    QuickGold was amazing - But my home button became less sensitive recently - So QuickGold doesn’t work properly anymore so I had to take it off :(
