Chronic Dev is back in the jailbreaking scene with their latest developments on the iPod touch 2G jailbreak. While some might have thought this development team wen’t AWOL after the iPhone Dev Team announced their own 2G jailbreak, redsn0w, that’s not entirely true. Sure, the team backed off for a while and congratulated the iPhone Dev Team on their accomplishment, but only because they were hard at work towards their own iPod touch 2G jailbreak. They’ve codenamed it 0wnboot and have uploaded a video to Qik to explain:
Chronic Dev mentions on their blog that they are now at par with the iPhone Dev Team as this is the same exploit. Sadly, that means that this jailbreak is also tethered. On the other hand, it’s a good thing because it provides some friendly competition between the teams which could speed up their progress. That doesn’t mean these teams are against each other though because in the end the main goal is that the iPod touch 2G is successfully jailbroken.
Rumors were going around that Chronic Dev would release their untethered iPod touch 2G jailbreak at 10AM GMT (that’s British time), but we can confirm that this is not true. Just like redsn0w, there’s no confirmed date for the release, so just sit back and be patient. That word seems to be getting dull but it’ll be worth the wait. Whoever may release the jailbreak, good luck to both.
Mobile Colloquy is very much like its desktop kin. If you’re familiar with using Colloquy for your Mac, you’ll understand the simple to use and easy to integrate scripting via AppleScript, where you could easily join chat rooms across multiple servers.
We first saw Mobile Colloquy back in 2007 when it was made available via the Installer.app and it very much the same on the surface as its jailbroken predecessor. It’s taken the promise shown back then and has turned into an excellent and stable release that’s now available through the App Store.

Air Photo lets you print pictures wirelessly directly from your iPhone or iPod touch. Just install the app (for $1.99, cheap if you print your iPhone’s photos often) on your mobile device, put the server on your Mac (or PC, if you swing that way), and then you can snap and print at will. Connecting to the server from your device opens up a Bonjour window, where you can crop or adjust the picture and then print whatever you like.
While the technology itself won’t be that helpful for everyone (who really prints pictures any more, especially iPhone pictures?), it is interesting to see this done so easily and well with a wireless connection. Sure, there’s apps like Remote and the Keynote controllers, but it seems like the iPhone-as-wireless-accessory idea is still relatively untapped on the App Store.

The iPhone Dev-Team’s various web pages have seen a flurry of updates in the last few hours in what appear to be final hints of a forthcoming iPod touch 2G jailbreak. Check out the full write-up over at iPod touch Fans.

FOLLOW-UP: My speculation and predictions on redsn0w were completely incorrect, and redsn0w is actually the iPod touch 2G jailbreak. You can view the whole post about it on the iPhone Dev Team’s blog here.
So we’ve all seen yellowsn0w.com, but there’s a new color of snow to hit the web: redsn0w.com. Yellowsn0w was set up by the iPhone Dev Team and redirects you to their 3G unlock, but we can’t give you much detail as to what redsn0w is. If you visit the site, all you’re presented with is a picture that has been constantly changing. It’s gone from the typical pwnage pineapple, to a dog, and even to a picture of the Teletubbies.
One thing that we can confirm is that it is running on the same servers as yellowsn0w.com, so it belongs to the iPhone Dev Team. It could have something to do with a 2G iPod touch jailbreak, but at this point it’s highly unlikely. But if the iPhone Dev Team has been hiding something up their sleeves this whole time, today would be their day to tell us. As of this post it’s Sunday, and on the Dev Team’s clock that means funday. A little term that they like to use when they have their own little show-and-tell.
The iPhone Dev Team has yet to comment about it on their blog, nor do we know if they ever will. They could very well be pranking us, and getting a good laugh in. But we might as well be optimistic about it and hope for the best - just don’t be too surprised when what you were hoping for doesn’t happen.

UPDATE: The rumors were right on the ball. Near the end of the keynote held at Moscone West as part of Macworld 2009 was the introduction of a new 17″ MacBook Pro. Like noted, it features a non-removable battery and the best battery life to date. Just don’t be shy about the $2799 price tag.
According to Apple Insider, a 17″ unibody MacBook Pro could be showcased at the upcoming Macworld Expo ‘09. More surprisingly, rumor has it that inside will be a non-removable battery in return that it will be much more slim and able to run much longer than previous models. For many, this is a downside because many Mac users enjoy having a removable battery for many reasons.
Writer Mike Rose from over at The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) would be on the ball with this rumor if it indeed comes true, as he predicted a new 17″ MacBook a few days ago as one of his Macworld predictions. You can read all of the TUAW writers’ predictions here, and the full story on AppleInsider here.
The App Store has only been around since July, yet has over 10,000 applications already. With that many applications, it can become a pain to find an application you’re looking for or find new applications. Luckily, there’s a website called AppShopper that makes all that a breeze.
AppShopper archives every application released on the App Store, and has detailed information about each of them. You can browse for the Top 100 free and paid applications, browse the newest released applications and more. You can also use their handy search bar to search for a specific application or type in a keyword to pull up similar applications.
This website also becomes very handy when applications go on sale such as during the holidays, because AppShopper allows you to categorize applications by price changes. This way, all applications that go on sale will fall under this category on the website because they all fell in price. Other categories include updated and new applications. And of course, like the App Store, you can browse by genre including games, sports and utilities.
You can bookmark AppShopper, follow their Twitter, and subscribe to their RSS Feed by going here.
Long before the App Store was released, a guy named r4m0n released a game called iPhysics for the jailbroken community. This game was simple, yet so much fun. You had to get a shape from Point A to Point B by drawing various shapes and lines. And best of all, it was absolutely free.
But of course, whenever something good comes along like this there is always someone else out there that is looking to take advantage of it. And that’s exactly what happened. Since Apple released their App Store in July, there’s now three or four different copycat applications that go from $0.99 to $4.99. Amongst them, Touch Physics and Crayon Physics (iTunes links).
This isn’t fair at all to r4m0n, but there’s truly little that he can do about it. r4m0n also has his iPhysics application on the App Store, called iPhysics Lite, and coming soon is the full version. They both cost money, but his sales won’t be as high as they could be because of the copycat developers. That’s Hudson Entertainment and Gamez 4 Touch, to be specific.
Hack the iPod touch has managed to get our hands on all three applications - iPhysics, Touch Physics and Crayon Physics - and we’ll be reviewing them in a head-to-head comparison coming soon. We’ll also post it on our App Store reviews page, so keep checking back.

Danls92 is taking a look at various different headphones in a lengthy comparison and review - a Hack the iPod touch exclusive. Danls92 is an occasional writer for us here at Hack the iPod touch, and although his articles are published under my name they are fully written by himself.
Seeing as the holiday season has just passed, and I’m willing to bet a bunch of you have some money burning a hole in your pocket, I decided to do a head-to-head comparison rather than review each of the headphones independently. This way, you can see which headphone fits your need (and your price range) best. Below you’ll find a comparison chart, and a brief review of each with my impressions and opinions.
