thumbupdownEarlier today, the iPhone Dev Team released their tethered jailbreak for the iPod touch 2G. The big question now is: do you attempt at jailbreaking now or wait in hopes that an untethered jailbreak will be released in the coming weeks? It’s a hard decision, but one that you might find easier to make once you realize the difficulty level that the tethered jailbreak tags along with it. I’ll explain across the jump.

pwnedThe iPhone Dev Team have updated their PwnageTool and QuickPwn jailbreaking tools to include support for the Firmware 2.2.1 update released a few days ago. If you have an original iPod touch or iPhone, you can update normally through iTunes to Firmware 2.2.1 and then run QuickPwn. If you have a 3G iPhone, you must follow the iPhone Dev Team’s specific instructions as there is a baseband update (02.30.03) in Firmware 2.2.1 which affects the yellowsn0w 3G unlock. If you’re not interested in unlocking your 3G iPhone, then these steps don’t apply and you can run QuickPwn normally. Lastly, the updated jailbreaking tools do not include support for the 2G iPod touch but the iPhone Dev Team states that “redsn0w is being actively researched and developed.”

PwnageTool is compatible with Mac only while QuickPwn supports both PC and Mac. You can find the official download for PwnageTool (Mac) here, QuickPwn (PC) here, and QuickPwn (Mac) here. There’s also many mirrored download links if you choose not to download the official torrent.

If there’s anyone that you should be following on Twitter, it’s TweetContest. Everyday at 4:44PM EST, TweetContest hosts a contest on Twitter to win great prizes. In fact, they’ve already given away an iPod nano and a Linkin Park gift pack. Today’s prize is a 4GB designer flash drive, called a Mimobot.

To enter their contests, you must send a tweet to @TweetContest with the correct answer to the question they post on their Twitter page. The questions are fairly simple: to win the iPod nano you had to be the 25th person to tweet how many balloons were in a particular picture. The correct answer was 14, and javajunky was the lucky Twitter user to win. Congratulations javajunky!

A preview of today’s prize:

Apple has just pushed out Firmware 2.2.1 for iPod touch, iPod touch 2G, iPhone and iPhone 3G. The official update notes list mostly bug fixes,  but we’ll keep our eyes open for any other undocumented changes. If you’ve updated to Firmware 2.2.1, let us know if you’ve found any other updates we should know of.

If you choose to update to Firmware 2.2.1 we’ll remind you that while all media (music, videos, App Store apps) will stay untouched, any previous jailbreak will be removed. That includes all themes and jailbroken applications. Firmware 2.2.1 cannot be jailbroken at this time until the iPhone Dev Team releases an updated version of their jailbreaking tool, QuickPwn, for both PC and Mac. The Firmware 2.2.1 update is available through iTunes.

What’s new:

  • Official: Improved stability of Safari
  • Official: Fixed bug where photos saved from Mail would not display correctly
  • Official: Fixed bug where some Apple Lossless (ALAC) files would skip during playback
  • User Found: When switching between tabs in Safari, it doesn’t reload the site but shows the latest page load.
