Skype has released their official application for the iPhone and iPod touch. Skype is a very popular voice-over-IP (VOIP) and instant messaging application that allows you to make phone calls over the internet. Calls can be made to other Skype users or to those with regular landline phones.

For Canadians, like myself, the release of this application is a letdown. That’s because Skype has not released this application on the Canadian iTunes App Store. None-the-less, it’s not too difficult to do a search on how to create a free U.S. iTunes Store account and you’re good to go.

Many users, mainly using the iPod touch 2G, have been reporting that this application crashes upon use. If you’re jailbroken, there’s a solution out there for you. From Cydia, update the package called Mobile Substrate. Once updated, the Skype application shouldn’t crash anymore. That’s just a temporary fix: Skype will likely release an official update if it turns out to be a bug.

Compatible with:

  • iPhone (voice & IM)
  • iPhone 3G (voice &  IM)
  • iPod touch 2G (voice & IM)
  • iPod touch 1G (IM only)

You can get this application for free here. [iTunes link]
