It’s not a Case. It’s Not a Skin. It’s a Shade - Review
Catchy slogan, good looks, and oh so much more. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to describing the Shade for the iPod touch 1st gen in just a few, short words. From diverse color choice to surprising affordability,$16.95, Shades really do go far and beyond with a lot of bang for your buck along the way.
The Case
DESIGN
After weeks of use, the Shade proved to be quite the accessory.
As seen to the side, the Shade has quite a simple design. The case itself is one piece.
Varying from others brands, Shades offers full screen protection for the iPod built into the case with no need for any additional accessories bought (screen protectors). The material used to make this innovative product is resilient Polyurethane (soft-plastic) which has many uses, but is known for durability and protection. In this case, impermeability toward water, quite useful for an iPod by the way. Then a resistance to dirt, grime, wrinkles, and other issues plaguing cases makes a Shade all the better.
The only exposed area of the case is the bottom, USB port and earphone jack.
This proves especially useful for plugging into docks and other power source as well as eliminating the need for an adapter or anything of that source. Money-saving and convenient. Two things I like to hear!
Also worth mentiong, it makes application a snap.

The Shades case is surprisingly thin, only .4mm! It offers a snug fit for the iPod while at the same time giving it a nice, firm grip. Then combine that with it being light-weight and we have ourselves a win-win.
APPLICATION
Placing the case on the iPod can be defined as simplicity at its best.
(The opening at the bottom is not only for easy accessibility but also acts as the primary way to place the case on the iPod)
The entire process is simply sliding the iPod into the case. Easy as that.
The case has two slits, one on each side. Both allow opening the case a bit to aid in placing the Shade. It is recommended that the iPod first be cleaned with a cloth, and then just slide the Touch in until it is completely covered, and that’s it.
Now, you’re protected while at the same time looking pretty stylish.
REMOVAL
Removing the Shade is simple as well, but there were some issues here and there.
In practice, the user simply turns the iPod upside down and uses their thumb to push it down. In my experience it was fairly easy but required a bit of force.
Tip: Don’t be so hesitant to use some elbow grease and get that sucker off.
Afterward, apply a few times and allow the case to get familiar to your iPods body. Soon, it’ll go on with no problem.
Aside from this minor issue, if at that, removal was fairly easy and just shows that simplicity doesn’t rule out quality and ingenuity.
LOOKS
Style and a certain bit flair. The Shade certainly fits these descriptions.
Available in a multitude of color options, Shades certainly offers quite a bit to the table and gives the customer a bit to think about. Whether you be a guy or a gal, Shades are befitting.
Then we have the elegant textured appearance which seems to accompany the Polyurethane case.
A nice backdrop to the subtle Shades logo on the back of the case adds a portrait-esque feel which is incredibly endearing to say the least.
Offering some class along with eye-appeal is certainly a benefit for the consumer!
The Company
ECO-FRIENDLY
Colorado-based Shades certainly is a business model for companies nowadays. The reason, corporate responsibility which seems to have lost meaning.
Everything about Shades is directed toward going “green.” CEO Ryan Ferreira has incorporated environmental-friendly strategies with overall business.

As seen above and to the right, packaging is minimal. On arrival, the cases came in via envelope with just small plastic bags perfect for reuse concerning storage for the cases or any other purpose whether it be a container for gifts or other events. All information and other documentation was stored inside of the case and quite easy to remove.
By following this “Less is Best” strategy, Ferreira is being both cost-effective and eco-friendly while at the same time being helpful to that who purchased (No need to fool with boxing and all this which is destined for the trash).
Shades is not only providing a quality case, but they are also achieving a greater goal, strive to preserve our planet and change it for the better.
(We can only hope other companies follow such an example)
This sort of consideration is unique and astounding. Certainly a reason to be applauded.

Personally, I say this is a nice compromise between skins (InvisibleShield) and slim cases like the Incase Slider. More substantial protection from scratching, but less bulky than the Slider or even the PowerSupport AirJacket.

In the anticipation of my soon to arrive ipod touch, i have spent the last few days researching ipod touch cases to find the best overall for protection and practicality. My three main concerns for protection were,
1. How will it fare it is dropped (oooh scary)
2. How does it fare against water (OH NO RAIN)
3. SCREEN PROTECTION
So as a result I have come to the conclusion that most cases are way too expensive, and don’t seen to cover all the bases for me to be comfortable to use it without worry.
In the end of researching cases and after reading this review, I have come to two choices, this one, and the armor 3600. I feel like I will probably choose this, 1. because of the at least somewhat water resistance that most cases dont have, enough to keep out the rain, SCREEN protection, and If I drop it it probably wont shatter into a thousand pieces.
Now I would have gone with the armor 3600 for the most optimal protection, but I have come to realize that the armor 3600 although nearly completely indestructible, probably would make it too heavy and definetly wouldn’t fit in my pocket. Anyways, It cost way too much.
So Shade yes, Armor 3600 NO,

Interesting - very few cases have screen protectors, and those that do tend to be bulky and a bit “executive”-looking. So this definitely seems worth a look. However, it would have been good to have had some assessment of how the screen protector affected touch sensitivity, something that has been an issue with some.

Nice case! I like the variety of colors that it comes it. Griffin and Belkin should be ashamed because they haven’t made cases this thin. I like the eco-friendly idea. This is actually the first time that I have heard of the company Shades, but it looks like it will be a major player in iPod and MP3 player cases.

Wow, this is probably one of the coolest cases I have ever seen!! I love the shades of different colors, the slickness and the sexiness of it. The silicone cases don’t look half as good compared to these ones. I also love the fact that these things have a built-in screen protector. Definitely a great method to keep those ugly scratches away. Nice review too.

That looks to be the absolute BEST skin available for the iTouch. Unbelievably thin and perfectly molded to the contours of the iTouch. And check out those colors! Cool Blue is my personal fav. The purple is wicked, also.

I took a look at the site. Looks to be a nice solution for protection and aesthetics. These guys are so kewl for sending them over to you for free. I will be sure to give my own impressions in the forums if I receive one. I currently have the Griffon iClear and I am not perfectly happy with it mostly due to plastic not being flush at the bottom of the unit.
If selected I would like one for the iPod Touch 2g. If color preference is available I would like a blue one, either shade.
