It’s becoming more evident that a jailbreaking tool for the new 2nd-generation (2G) iPod touch is unlikely – at least from the iPhone Dev Team. The members of this development team have labeled the task of unlocking the 3G iPhone as their top priority right now, and left 2nd-gen iPod touch owners hanging with their comment, “we are not looking at the iPod touch 2G at the moment.”
But just has long is “at the moment” going to be? User ledhendrixman over at iPod touch Fans found a few interesting comments made by members of the iPhone Dev Team in regards to the 2nd-gen iPod touch jailbreak. Continue reading to find out what the team members had to say and for the full scoop on the progress of the 2nd-gen jailbreak.
Reading through the thousands of comments that the iPhone Dev Team gets each time they write a blog post can be a nuisance, and isn’t something that a typical person like you or I would do. Maybe you, but certainly not me. But ledhendrixman did just that, and found some interesting comments made by two of the Dev Team members. After a user commented on one of the iPhone Dev Team’s blog posts, asking if they’ll ever be a jailbreak for the 2nd-gen iPod touch, Dev Team member pytey put it pretty straight forward:
It isn’t even on our radar to be honest.
That said, it looks more evident that the 2G iPod touch jailbreak isn’t next in line, it’s not in the line at all. Another member from the Dev Team, MuscleNerd, also had his own comments about the jailbreak for the 2nd-gen iPod touch:
If the application CPU or bootrom used by the iPod 2G make their way into some future iPhone, then we’d definitely be motivated to talk more about it. I think it’s *still* the case that only one of us even has an iPod 2G
In an earlier comment posted by MuscleNerd, he makes it obvious that the iPhone Dev Team are not working on a jailbreak method for the 2G jailbreak at all, by mentioning the amount of time they’ve worked on it:
The iPhone DevTeam has tried to jailbreak the iPod Touch 2G for an accumulated total of 25 minutes, give or take 5 minutes.
To make that easier to understand, unless the processor that is inside the new 2nd-gen iPod touch is used in a future iPhone, they aren’t interested. This is because there is a new processor in the 2nd-gen iPod touch (s5l8720x) with a new bootrom which makes the iPhone Dev Team unable to send old files to be exploited, and they don’t want to bother investigating it unless it’s released for an iPhone – which is the basis of the dev team anyways. Like he mentions, only one member of the Dev Team even has a 2nd-gen iPod touch. So unless the rest of the team is holding off on purchasing one of these shiny devices until Christmas rolls around, the impatient complaints from 2nd-gen owners aren’t going to go away. MuscleNerd says it right – it is the iPhone (not iPod) Dev Team anyways, right?
What now?
Although it’s clear that the iPhone Dev Team’s best interests don’t include a jailbreak method for the 2nd-gen iPod touch, there’s some hope.
I’m not sure about Chronic Dev, but I’ll throw it out there anyways. They were up and running with a series of updates which led us to believe they were making some significant progress. Next, the huge controversy that resulted from the Chronic Dev Team’s site suddenly going *kaboom* (insert your favorite action word you know from a comic book here). This sparked a huge debate over whether or not Chronic Dev was a hoax. But they’re back up again, and at least give us a little faith and anticipation towards a jailbreak. What do you think: fake or real?
Update: After discussion on iPod touch Fans, there’s more evidence that the Chronic Dev is definitely not a hoax, and are making some significant progress towards the 2G jailbreak. User King Chronic from over at iPod touch Fans posted some key facts about this topic:
It is a clean slate, in a sense. dev never released a client to communicate with dfu.20, since that was obviously new, or the recovery mode protocol of 2.*, but I guess that is different because they were saying that was ‘cmws thing’. So once it was realized that we needed to be able to do this if we even wanted to think about jailbreaking the device , tom3q and wEsTbAeR– went at it. Over the course of something like three days, huge progress was made, and eventually we had a client that could have a 2 way interactive session with iBoot, the iPod / iPhone Bootloader, or if that sounds confusing, think of it like the BIOS on your computer.
You see, in older iBoot revisions, the diags command would jump straight to any parameter you gave it and start executing code there, with no checks or anything. so you could just use mw to write a small amount of code to 0×9000000, or if it was a patched iboot you wanted to strap, you would just send it to 0×9000000, and from there you would just type “diags 0×9000000″ and it would execute the code there. now, in 2.*, there is a permission + range check in place, so if you do not have a provisioned engineering / debug device that they have locked up at Apple HQ, then you cannot use diags
In fact, you can follow Chronic Dev’s progress on the 2G iPod touch jailbreak by visiting their Google Code page, here. The updates that they have posted make me more confident that they’re not a hoax, and they’re actually going to pull through on this one. They did mention in a blog post months back that they were almost 100% confident the method would work, so let’s keep our fingers crossed. It would be a huge publicity stint for Chronic Dev if they do pull through and would actually form some sort of “friendly competition” with the iPhone Dev Team.
Talking about hoaxes, there’s no better place to find them than YouTube. You’re wasting your time searching
for “2g jailbreak” on YouTube, because you’ll just find yourself getting ‘rick rolled’ by another YouTube user with too much time on their hands. But there’s a few videos that I believe stand out from the rest, and might be considerable progress towards (or even at) a 2nd-gen iPod touch jailbreak. Just take a look at this user’s YouTube videos and he shows you a 2nd-gen iPod touch that is jailbroken along with other videos such as VoIP on the 2G. But before you go following the instructions based off a simple YouTube video, think twice. Any video that tells you to download an .exe file or other type of file is a virus 99% of the time. I’ll throw this YouTube fake at you, for example. It should be evident to you that it’s fake, unless your very gullible.
Either way, whoever releases a method will be praised and appreciated by so many – so it’s definitely something many people are taking a look at. Whether Chronic, iPhone Dev or a random YouTuber release the method, we’ll be happy regardless!

Yes, i have 100% confidence in The chronic Dev. So from what it sounds like they can rewrite a restricted part of the i pod touch 2G (Or at least a part they aren’t supposed to be able to rewrite.)

I started out thinking chronic wasnt going to do much, but now I see that he actually wants to make something happen. I wouldn’t be surprised if he soon takes the reins from the iPhone dev team. I gotta admit im a bit disapointed in the iPhone Dev squad. I just wish they could maybe take one weekend and make some legit progress on the 2G, and maybe help out chronic a little, I mean, I think a 2G jailbreak is more important than a iPhone 3G unlock
December 6th, 2008 at 8:24 am
Yeah, I’m a little disappointed to but I can’t complain because they are the iPhone Dev Team after all (not the iPod Dev Team). And I think that’s the message they’re trying to get across.
The Dev Team also releases these methods for their own benefit, and to use on their own devices, but if they don’t even have a 2nd-gen iPod touch (only one member does) then they don’t see a purpose in trying nor do they have their own devices for testing grounds.

i found this youtube video and the people in the comments has success.

Cyberlight, that’s the video that I posted as an example of a YouTube fake in this article because it’s not real. He tells you to download QuickPwn but that’s a jailbreaking tool by iPhone Dev and they aren’t even working on a jailbreaking method for the 2nd-gen iPod touch yet.
December 6th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
hey guys, I cannot believe nobody else is looking into this right now. I though there would be some ‘russian mafia’ looking into it right now… you see people, there is more world after the sea
take it easy, you might get some gift for Xmas!
salut
December 6th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
Wow, if Apple thinks that they have won the battle of the hackers, I bet they will install these chips on the next iPhone, and when they do, the dev teams will find a way to exploit them. So all you can do is just wait till someone makes a breakthrough.
December 7th, 2008 at 5:03 am
Hmmm… I seem to remember awhile back the iPhone Dev Team said that a CASE of 2G iPod Touches had just arrived, but now only one person has one?
December 7th, 2008 at 5:54 am
Dude, that website that u said is fake has like a million success stories. Are you sure it couldn’t be for real?
December 7th, 2008 at 8:22 am
Dylan, that’s what MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev Team is saying – so it must be true.
asdfghjkl, it’s not real because it would be widespread on so many websites that a 2nd-gen iPod touch jailbreak has been released, and also QuickPwn is a tool by iPhone Dev who aren’t even working on a 2G jailbreak so how could they have updated the tool to jailbreak the iPod touch 2G? And if they did update QuickPwn to make it iPod touch 2G compatible, they would mention it on their blog.
December 7th, 2008 at 11:26 am
ya and also that any videp’s with “success” stories are either comment blocked or comment restricted to prevent hate comments cause itss soo fake
December 7th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Exactly Joel! Great point
December 8th, 2008 at 6:26 am
It’s a shame but I was getting fed up of restoring loads of time and spending hours on researching apps
December 8th, 2008 at 7:57 am
hello!
well soo far I think that it would be great to have a hack into 2g but IT LOOKS like that nobody is working on it :/
i hope it will be done soon and I’m looking forward to it….
December 10th, 2008 at 3:12 am
Hopefully it will come soon Jure! There are people working on it such as Chronic Dev. And Caleb, you’re right. It can sometimes be a pain in the behind when it comes to jailbreak.
December 10th, 2008 at 8:32 am
I’m sure there are a lot of reasons to want to jailbreak an iPod touch 2G. I mainly care about being able to put huge numbers of apps onto it and organize them. I’ve already downloaded maybe 300 free apps (mostly games & puzzles) and paid for dozens more. There is no good way to juggle things so you can try them all out because of the bizarre limitation of 144 apps on the device at one time. Even a tool for the PC/Mac that lets tells you how many you’re installing and lets you rearrange them across Home screens (and sort them) would be tremendously helpful, but what would really be great would be the ability to put them into categories/folders (and, hopefully, subcategories/subfolders) on the device, to be able to sort them by name/size/date, and to be able to provide an alias (or rename) for an icon whose title is not a good representation of its function.
All these sorts of abilities have been on PDAs for 12+ years. The first Palm has 128k of storage, which is over 250,000 times less than the best iPod touch, so it’s especially ironic that the latter (and not the former) has an arbitrary limit on number of apps you can manage on it.
(Yes, I know it’s primarly a music device for most people, but I already have an iPod with a big hard drive for music; I bought the touch because of the app store and to enjoy the incredible explosion of high-quality apps, most free or $1 apiece, being created. In fact, two phone calls to Apple pre-purchase both assured me that the extra storage in the 32G versus the smaller ones could indeed be used to store more apps!)
December 10th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
hey guys about that youtube video when u post a comment it has to be approved so the guy who made the video could delete the negative responses
December 10th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
That’s exactly right sukh! It’s not real at all.
December 11th, 2008 at 5:34 am
its a fake I tried it.. it doesn’t recognize the 2g at all.
December 11th, 2008 at 5:35 am
yeah, I tried that youtube vid and many others and none of them work. chronic should have something soon. personally, i am disaapointed in the dev team. i know they may say that they are working only on iphone’s based on their name, but if they have already jailbroken the 1g touch why not the 2nd? they may not have any internal reason too, but there sure are a whole lot of people on the outside who would be thankful to them.
December 11th, 2008 at 10:14 am
yea there will be a lot of people kissing the ground thay walk on it any one succedes jb the ipod touch 2g
December 12th, 2008 at 5:55 am
I wish there would be a jailbreak for the ipod touch 2g out pretty soon, does anyone have any idea how far Chronic Dev (or whoever) are into it (if they even are)?
December 12th, 2008 at 8:22 am
kool, you may want to check your computer for viruses. If you installed anything off a link provided to you on YouTube, it’s likely a virus such as a trojan horse.
lols, Chronic Dev is working on it but I’m not sure of their progress at this time. You can always read up on their updates at their blog. http://chronic-dev.org/blog/
December 12th, 2008 at 10:29 am

December 13th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
“to tell u the truth we are almost finished whith the 2g and at this time we will be finished by Christmas dont worry…”
I find this hard to believe. I’m pretty sure the iPhone Dev Team doesn’t talk like that and they clearly mentioned they aren’t working on it. If you’re the real deal, post it on the iPhone Dev Team blog. We’d love to hear.
December 13th, 2008 at 10:23 pm

December 16th, 2008 at 11:53 am

Hey u want to remove apps just tap one app icon and hold it there untill the icons start shaking. Them push the cross that appears on the top of the app to delete it. Merry xmas guys i hope er will get jailbreak soon.
December 18th, 2008 at 8:17 am

December 20th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
actually today i found a way to do that and it’s simple it can work on any gen and any firmware go to appulo.us/appdb and search for an app download it, open it while itunes is open and it will actually just appear on your applications tab

The new second gen Ipod IS jailbreakable. Its been done, ive seen it done, and Ive USED a jailbroke second gen Ipod touch.
The person who did it informed that it was running a slightly modified 2.2 firmware, he only had placed Cydia on it. I was told it took over 40 hours to complete, and its a 100% soft jailbreak, no opening required…
More info comming later!
But I assure all the readers that its PERFECTLY jailbreakable!!
January 5th, 2009 at 12:38 pm

WE ARE SOOOOO CLOSE. THE IPHONE DEV TEAM JUST POSTED ”
Thermonuclear pop!
* Well it isn’t a British Thermonuclear Device.
* It isn’t an episode from “The Twilight Zone”
* And it certainly isn’t iPhone 3G related (right now)
* There is one other device…
* It fits in your pocket..
* What can it be?
http://blog.iphone-dev.org/
THEY ARE SOOOO CLOSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
January 14th, 2009 at 5:32 am

January 20th, 2009 at 8:59 am
Dev have hacked the 2g at last an like ty said it is called redsn0w, at the moment you have to reboot the system manually every time you switch on and you also have to do it from your computer. Dev are just fixing this minor problem now and then the jb will be available for public release! Just a li’l longer peops…
January 22nd, 2009 at 2:55 am
