I like free games on the App Store, especially ones that interest me – In this case: Football! (Soccer for you guys across the pond.)
The idea of this game is to use the touch screen of your device to keep the ball in the air and off the ground. Simple, yes? No. This game is subtley difficult, while at the same time being extremely entertaining and £0, $0, and 0 Euros.
Developed by Brightai, Powered by Boximo, this application shows the potential of the iPhone platform for fun arcade games with brilliant graphics and casual gameplay.
As I said, the idea of the game is to keep the football off the ground by tapping it in the same way that you would if it were real life. If you tap it in the bottom right corner of the ball, it will bounce off to the left, hit the side of the screen and gravity will take over as it falls back to the ground.
The app also lets you show off your competitive side – With local and (coming soon) worldwide high score tables, you can try and be the best and beat the rest.
The actual look and feel of the app is amazing too. The graphics are something I’d expect to see in £1.19 ($2) game, and the sound adds a nice touch (whenever the ball hits the floor, the ref blows his whistle and the crowd roars in the background throughout – I love it.) The sound of the ball “being kicked” could be a little better though.
A little hint for you: Keep the ball on the screen at all times. If you let it fly up in the air, you won’t be able to see when it’s coming down and it’s a matter of how fast your reaction time is. I wouldn’t risk it if you were going for the world record.
The app boasts a beautifully designed website and a long list of features due to be coming soon, including:
- Global Leaderboards
- More gameplay modes.
A recent update to the application (30th October 2008) added the following:
- Bug Fixes.
- New Kick sound.
- An Options menu.
- Better ball responsiveness. (Personally I dislike this. The ball seems laggier, and I actually kicked the ball once and it just flew up in the air and off the screen… it never came back. I think this needs fixing ASAP)
- Enter a “Player Name.”
- “Reset Local Leaderboards” Option.
- Leaderboard has a username column.
- Temporary removal of crowd FX.
- Pausing the game now stops all ingame sound.
The biggest features clearly being Profiles and Online scoring. But what do I think of it as an app? Should you download and install it on your device? The answer – Yes.
- Graphics: 10/10
- Audio: 10/10 (Ball sound got fixed in 1.1)
- Gameplay: 9/10 (described as casual gameplay – Exactly what it is)
- Features: 8/10 (but more coming soon)
- Overall: 9/10
