Nowadays, everyone wants to jailbreak their iPod Touch or iPhone. Well… not everyone – Me for example. I’ve opted for the “Buy 2 iPod Touches and jailbreak neither of them” method.

But why? Why do you NEED to jailbreak your device on 2.x? I understand 1.1.x – But then… why are you still on 1.1.x!?!?!?!!?!?

You can read my thoughts here if ya like…

There are three options:

1) You jailbreak 2.x for a select few apps – All I can think of is the legendary application from my not-close-friend-but-I-like-to-think-he-likes-me Skylar EC. You might jailbreak JUST for PocketTouch. But there are no other good ports to 2.x that I can think of…

2) You jailbreak to rebel! Screw Apple to the max! Watch me void my warranty and show off to all my friends that I have Cydia and Installer and they don’t! Mwahhaha!

3) And possibly the most likely… You’re all jailbreaking for illegal and wrong cracked applications.

Now – This is wrong. I know me giving you a talking to won’t change your mind – But I’ve spent a LOT on apps. Between £250 – £500. And I’ve paid legitimetly for EVERY app I’ve bought and that are on my 2 devices.

I’m fair to developers by giving them what they deserve by paying them the asking price for their application. I’d be pretty pissed off if I made an app worthy of £2 and people were cracking it and stealing my work. Pissed off to the max… But everyone’s doing it.

If the devs wanted you to have it for free, they’d've made the price Free. If you can’t afford it – Go out and get a job or sell some stuff to make money. It really winds me up when people request a jailbreak on iPTF just so they can get their beloved cracked apps back on a newer firmware.

You people under 14 must not know how much hard work goes into making these apps. So why don’t you save the money you were going to spend on a pack of gum and put it on an iTunes account. Maybe if you do that once a week, you’ll avoid breaking the law and maybe earn back my respect.

Sorry to put it bluntly – But I hope Apple F**KING GET YOU. =D

I want the jailbreak makers to make the jailbreak stop you from accessing the parts on your device which make the cracked apps work… But I know it’s never going to happen.

Anyway… Message to all readers: Unjailbroken 2.x is fine – Even if you go out and buy a £20 iTunes card and download good free apps and some good paid ones. Cracking is bad..

i totaly agree, the only reasons i would jailbreak my ipod or phone would be for the app sorting ones like poof and catergories. No good devs are developing on jailbreak anymore because they can use there skills on itunes and make money. jailbreaking the firmware is interesting but its no longer that useful.

  2. trashy says:

i never jailbreaked but i did read a lot about it, wasn’t there that bosstools thats suppose to help make more space if u have a lot of apps so u dont slow down ur touch? thats a pretty good incentive tool to jailbreak unless the new 2.1 updates doing what bosstools does? also is 2.1 any good, i’ve got 2.0 which works find if a little slow since i got lots of apps but i’m afraid some of my apps might start acting up if i upgrade so i wanna ask if its really better to upgrade?

  3. Frozen72 says:

I really hope they they brick everyone’s iPod that has a patched mobileinstallation file. The only reason there is to jailbreak is for themes.

  4. after says:

is there a way to purchase apps without a credit card?

would gladly pay a couple bucks for lots of em … just no cc and won’t be able to get one anytime before the touch becomes obsolete … ;)

  5. Abcmsaj says:

    @after

    Yeahh.
There’s a tut on iPTF somewhere to make an iTunes account without a credit card.

Then all you have to do is go out and get yourself the cheapest possible iTunes card. My girlfriend bought me a £15 one the other day for letting her dad borrow my laptop :p

  6. JON says:

Ur AN Idiot ID RATHER HAVE MY PACK OF GUM AND MY GAMES! You Cant Get Wallpapers Or Anything If Your Ipod Touch Isnt Hacked So Don’t Even Say That BS U Can Have Your 2 POS(Piece Of S**t) Unhacked/Jailbroken ipods And Shove Them Right Up Your A** Because Your The Only Person THat Has 2 Ipods That Arent Jailbroken God your So Dumb! O BY THE WAY APPLE CAN SUCK MY N**S THERE A MULTI BILLION DOLLAR BUSINESS AND THEY CANT MAKE SOME S**T FREE F**K THEM I PAID FOR THE IPOD I CAN DO WHAT I WANT AND IF I BOUGHT THE DAMN THING WHY THE HELL ARE THEY GUNNA CHARGE ME TO PUT MORE S**T ON IT! RE****ED I KNOW! SO F**K APPLE IF THEY DONT LIKE WHAT I DO WITH MY IPOD AND SAME TO YOU BUDDY!!!!!

  7. Abcmsaj says:

    Right. My Turn.

    @JON

You can get wallpapers… idiot. You just can’t get themes which I can live without to be frank..

I’m not the only person. Please see the 4 comments above you.

Apple don’t make much money off the apps, idiot. Apple don’t MAKE all of the apps. I hate people like you that review apps on iTunes:

“Omfg APple U made a crap ApP!”

and think that everyone else is thinking the same as you.

If you don’t want to be charged for anything extra, my advice to you would be get back onto 1.1.4 where all of the apps are free and noone loses out when you crack one.

Now let me edit you comment for content and post your email here:

    luckyducky51591@aol.com

    LOLOL. LuckyDucky my ass.
    NEXT VICTIM.

  8. TouchRevolution says:

Heh… I LOVE how you posted his email. but now MY TURN.

Apple gets 15-30% of the money made off apps. So well, they do get ALOT of money from other peoples apps.

SECONDLY many people love themes. Thats why they jailbreak.

THIRDLY There are many other apps like hmmm MxTube for one. And others on the way like PwnPlayer and iSoulSeek that will just make AppStore its bitch……

The AppStore only goes so far. So if you like swinging your iPod/iPhone around like an idiot for a Lightsaber or Racing games but not youtube or music, then stay with app store, but if you like customization, music, youtube, then well jailbreak your ipod. The Title should have the words OPINION in it because it is your opinion.

  9. Abcmsaj says:

    @TouchRevolution

I understand: Jailbreaking can be used for stuff like MXTube and Customization – But you’re probably one of the only ones left who don’t use cracked apps (unless you do but withheld it)…

So yeah – Customization but more likely cracking..

  10. Connor says:

Cracking apps and not paying for them and keeping them on your iphone (what i do) is wrong. But most people just want to try them out before they but it because they do not know what to expect out of a PHONE game…whereas if you have an xbox 360 you dont really care to try it out before you buy it because you have high expectations that you know will be met.

  11. Bryan says:

I jailbreak and I don’t crack apps. I use Cydia for a few things, and I also buy stuff from the AppStore. Being a programmer/developer myself, I believe that jailbreaking is a great thing to do. Just because there are some people that do illegal things with it doesn’t mean that it is a bad thing. A lot of the apps in the AppStore aren’t worth what they charge for them, but I agree with you that if the developer is selling it for however much, that’s how much they think it’s worth; either pay for it or don’t use it.

  12. ChriB says:

    @ TouchRevolution
Apple gets 30%. But now think of how many employees they have to pay, mostly the people that check the apps that get send to Apple to get approved. Also think of the cost the servers do. The App Store is growing and more people get the ability to get more apps that equals in having a good server structure so things work well.
That’s why I think it’s ok that Apple is charging 30%.

Remember: Apple is a company, no matter what you say, they HAVE TO make money. No company would do that huge project and take NO money for it.

The post says “My Thoughts on Jailbreaking 2.x”, believe it or not but most people read it and think “Seems like this post is about somebody’s thoughts.” ;)

Yeah if you like Customization you’re fine with Jailbreaking, but there are A LOT people who don’t care what their homescreen looks like (me included).

And please don’t reduce the App Store Apps to things that only an “idiot” uses. No good post at all. So basically, there ARE a few (yeah it’s up to you to declare few) apps that you won’t get with the App Store, right?
So let everybody choose if they want them.
I don’t like the Customization stuff, watching Youtube works fine with the built-in Youtube.app.

Btw: I DO like Music, yeah, that’s why I bought the iPod touch. Having all that stuff like apps is awesome.
    To all people:
Remember that Apple neither make the apps, nor do they put the price on it. It’s up to the DEVs to choose a good price for the work they put into this.

    Back to topic:
Abcmsaj talked about all these things in his “article”, the main idea behind this post is CRACKING apps. I would really want to see some more posts about that, don’t you think the devs have to get paid for their work?
Did you ever think “that app is great but I don’t want to spend XY dollars on it”? Well most wouldn’t buy it then, some try to go the illegal way, but I for myself wait a week or two, maybe the price will be reduced at anytime soon.

    Thanks for reading.

  13. Rudi du Toit says:

I agree that hacking/cracking is bad (I am a developer) but what if you live in a country that does not have the Itunes shop? I live with it every day because I would really like the update (and I would gladly pay for it) but it is not made availible to buy because I live in South Africa…

I have the same issue with the Xbox live service and I think it is bull stuffies that I have to pay more for my electronic devices (import tax is a killer!) but we don’t get the full use of the product (itunes and Xbox live)

    What do you do?

  14. bobIsSTILLevil says:

dude i’m working and i agree with “Rudi du Toit”, i have the money to burn on the apps but in my country which is Malaysia, we dont get your priviledge. hell, i want to play some games on my ipod touch which i have to pay for but i cant since my country is not listed in your itunes. worst still, i have a US account but i cant use any credit card because its not valid for itunes app store. so sometimes you have to see it from the other side of the world. not just yours.we do have 3rd world countries you know..haha.man i feel like crying..haha. but just think about it.

  15. Midwinter Tech says:

I’m a software developer myself, and I TOTALY agree, cracking is bad!

May Apple lock up all jailbreaked iPods!!! When it happens – You deserve it!

    /MidwinterTechnologies

  16. Luar Roji says:

I’ve an new iPod Touch and it’s great, but as I don’t live in US or another country with iTunes Stores support, I can’t install apps..

Neither the free ones! I have international credit card and I bought my ipod with it in US, but now I can’t install apps. The only solution I’m seeing right now is to jailbreak the ipod or to fake an iTunes Store account.

    Both are ugly solutions :(

  17. Bryan says:

I agree that cracking apps is a terrible thing to do. Jailbreaking and cracking apps are not the same thing though. I would rather jailbreak my ipod touch and be able to put the programs that I write on my ipod than have to pay apple to get an iphone/ipod touch developer license. I don’t see how this is wrong or a bad thing, and I certainly don’t think that I deserve for apple to “lock up” my ipod as a previous commenter suggests.

  18. Emic says:

I think it really comes down to what you are using your touch for. If it’s just music, games, and entertainment like apple intended then you can get what u need through itunes. Personally, i want to be able to explore the potential of this machine for unorthodox applications like controlling the lights in my house or managing some of the technical tasks that i need to do for work (stuff I need to carry a laptop for today). Until apple stops restricting the types of things of things that I can do with their hardware and the types of programs that I can run I will continue to hack, crack, and jailbreak. It is called jailbreaking for a reason. This thing is pretty much a brick out of the box. Same goes for HP, dell, and other companies that put corporate alliances, profits, and antiquated and greed based ideas about intellectual property before end-users, functionality and creativity.

  19. Pedro says:

    Hi!
I’m new in this iPod Touch thing.
Are there any disadvantages for jailbreaking an iPod Touch?

  20. SteeeEEeeeph says:

I’m a software developer too but..

I THINK CRACKING APPS IS GOOD…

if you really can’t afford them.

I would not care to GIVE my work to someone who could not afford it.

See, the shit in this world is that you need money to have fun and this is one of the things that pisses me off the most since it’s always the same who are living a beautiful life on a bed of flower while other ones are almost starving.

I know what you’ll tell me, that if one can afford an iPod Touch, one is not poor.
    FALSE

I plan to buy an iPod Touch to use it as a PDA (I have ADD) and as I need rather special features, I will probably need to buy apps… I will have to search the bottom of my drawers to find every cent I need to buy it. So, it will be a pain in the ass if apps are like $30+ each.

  21. Help Me Understand says:

Don’t I have to jailbreak if I want to drag and drop music files (my own personal from my own purchased cds) to my ipod? I have a couple of hundred CDs at home, a hundred or so at work, and a couple hundred more on my old desktop. I don’t want to reburn them all or anything like that, plus it’s great to be able to add stuff from wherever I happen to be. Can I do that without jailbreaking?

  22. Markus Stöbe says:

Well, being a iPhone-Dev as well I see it compoletely different somehow.
My App got hacked pretty soon after releaseand at first I also thought “oh know” but then…all these people who download a cracked app from some unknown source and unknown integrity would never ever buy your app!

So, jailbreaking or not, cracking or not, most of the sales will stay the same! As far as I see it only a rare few people really risk the life of their shiny new gadget with jailbreaking it (yeah I know that nothing serious can happen, but ‘they’ don’t).

At least for me it wasn’t as bad that there are cracked versions around, much worse were the braindead reviews before Apple changed the review-system. Those have hurt sales very much and all because people are not using my support-email or just don’t read the manual…THATS the main problem…to me at least! :-)

  23. The Experiment: My 2.x Jailbreak Experience. / Hack the iPod touch says:

[...] of you may know that I recently wrote a controversial article on Why I am against jailbreaking 2.x – The main reasons being my hatred of cracked apps and their unfair consequences on the respected [...]

  24. Daniel says:

I disagree with you so much its not even funny.

Jailbreaking gives me sooo many apps that I use every day. Cycorder (video recording), MxTube to download youtube videos, winterboard so my iPhone doesnt look like the 1000000 other ones out there and many other awesome hacks and fun things to do that apple wont allow..

    Oh ya and SBsettings

  25. Nerd says:

Hey, actually jail breaking is alright, I never jailbroke my ipod, but you still have to consider the 3rd point of view. Jail breaking is legal and your allowed to download the cracks cause its legal. Holy crap I hate people whining about not doing jail breaking but in February, Apple is releasing an app which can make you download other 3rd viewing apps on your ipod touch without jaibreaking. Apple knows about this and it’s not illegal. Gheez, some of you people need to look at your perspectives and you should watch what you say before you type. That’s all I can say…

  26. froman says:
