Hey guys…

I’ve decided to create a weekly feature on the site, called “The 59p App Review.”

I was going to call it “Abc’s 59p’s” but I disapprove of the misuse of apostrophes.. =P

Anway: the 59p apps are the cheapest apps – They’re the $1 ones in Aus and USA I think, and I hand pick some good ones and write my thoughts on them.

This is the first week I’ll be running this, and if I get a good response in the comments, I’ll continue it – And maybe start a “Free App Review…” Look out for a new update every Saturday.

Formulas – Get it here.

I’ve been in college for about 3 weeks now studying Pure Mathmatics as one of my subjects. It requires a lot of forumlas to memorise and put into practice, and to be honest it was getting quite difficult to remember them all. I saw this and bought it. It has so many math formulas and functions in – Whether you want to solve a quadratic equation or find the Lowest Common Multiple of a pair of numbers. It also has a page dedicated to “Other Formulas” like Area of Circle, Area of Rectangle, Area of Triangle – Y’know.. The ones you always forget.

.

Chalkboard Calculator – Get it here.

On the subject of Math, sometimes the built-in calculator doesn’t do it for me. That’s when I found this. Chalkboard is a nice little app which spells out the sum for you. Let’s imagine you’re not very good at remembering what you inputted into your calculator – This app lets you write it in words rather than just punch it in. Look at the screenshot:

In my opinion, it’s more of an app for people who are used to saying the equation outloud as they write it down. And you need to have lightning fast iPhone-typing skills and a good memory to remember the little tips.

.

.

Mixing Faces – Get it here.

I never actually bought this – My brother did. But I decided to give it a go. It’s an app which lets you mix two peoples’ faces to form some sort of unhuman mutant creature… But it’s so complicated to work.

Yes – All the features are there (resizing, moving, transparency) but I couldn’t seem to line them up any faces well enough to create something as good as the example they give on the iTunes page (a cross breed Einstein-SteveJobs)

In my opinion, save your money and get Face Melter which is similar to this one but more amusing.

.

.

XyPhone – Get it here.

Ironically, this is said the same way as “ZiPhone” is – But let’s not get excited about dodgy jailbreaking here.

XyPhone is a basic Xylophone for the iPod and iPhone. It was the first app I bought after I got my 2G iPod Touch, in order to test out the speakers of it. I love it.

It’s a fun app and easy to use if you want to do a XySolo in the key of C major.. But I have a few disappointments:

  • The B block sounds rubbish. Muted and fades out too fast. Bleh.
  • I want there to be more octaves.
  • Even though it’s a Xylophone, I wouldn’t mind having sharps and flats.. =P

But yeah – For a cheap app it’s worth it. It even plays a little tune when you open the app or tap on the logo in the bottom. And it has one of my favourite icons ever. Adorable..

.

.

Seismometer – Get it here.

Don’t be put off by the reviews on this app – They’re just idiots who never bought it when it was free, and now regret it. I was one of the lucky ones who experienced it in its free version, and saw it had epic potential, which has now grown into something worth charging for:

Ever wanted to measure an earthquake? Course you have.. We all have. You can now with this. Seismometer uses the accelerometer to detect movement and show it on the screen as a real seismometer would. In the earlier version, all it was was this: Until recently when the developer introduced some new features and a price.

One of these features is the ability to change the sensitivity – Which is perfect! Now this app can actually detect my heartbeat when I lie my iPod on my chest. It’s almost mesmorising to play with and look at, and is my app of the week.

    @Craig Patchett

This hasn’t been updated since, but I can confirm that the new samples are a lot better quality – And I do look forward to updates. :)
