Back in the good old days of jailbreaking iPod firmware 1, this game was released on installer. I remember downloading iCopter and getting totally addicted. It was my favorite game on the iPod until firmware 2.0 came out. Than everything changed, it was no longer available. I was missing my favorite game! Now the same developer has ported the game over to firmware 2 and released it on the App Store.
In iCopter, the goal is to navigate the helicopter through a never ending, randomly generated maze and try to do it for as long as possible. If you hit any of the blocks, the ceiling or the floor, the game ends. Although the game sounds kind of boring, once you start playing, you’ll find yourself coming back again and again. It is extremely addictive. There is always the urge to have ‘one more try’ so that you can beat your highscore (you can see from the screenshots that I am not very good at all). When you make a personal high score, you are given the option to submit the score online and compare it against other scores. To control the game, you press and hold anywhere on the screen to accelerate the helicopter vertically and release to let the helicopter drop. The helicopter progresses constantly horizontally at the same speed. If you don’t understand, you can try the game out for free in your web browser at http://www.helicoptergame.net/.
The great thing about these controls is that there is no accelerometer input. This means that you can play it anywhere! While you are on the bus, in a car, on a plane or before you go to sleep! Since the game has come out, the developer has been furiously releasing update after update to make the game perfect. Before the developer updated the game, the physics of the helicopter were kind of messed up but now it is almost perfect. With the recent updates, you now have the options to have retro graphics, different colours, different background, etc.
Overall I was impressed by the game, it has been updated since firmware 1 and has recieved continuous support since it’s release. I believe this game is a must buy as it is so cheap and addictive.

- Gameplay: 90% -It’s very simple but very addictive
- Graphics: 60% – I’m into the retro graphics
- Sound: N/A – No sound
- Value: 100% – Very good value, it’s so cheap!
- Lasting Appeal: 85% – If you get addicted like I did, you won’t be able to stop!
- Overall: 90% – It’s cheap, it’s fun and you can play it anywhere! Anyone can play!
iCopter is a terrific game, I hope the App Store gets more games like this, affordable and simple. This game shows you that it’s sometimes better to not have accelerometer support and just have touch.
