Jailbreak Lingo for Dummies With yesterday’s release of the iPod touch jailbreak, there is a lot of terminology flying around that many may not be familiar with. “Jailbreak” is perhaps the most important term of all, but very few people actually know where it comes from.

The good news is that it’s not too hard to understand. The Mobile OS X, like any other operating system, has folders and files. Its main form of security comes in the form of a chroot jail, which is just a fancy way of saying that outsiders are only allowed to see the inside of one specific folder. The jailbreak, then, is a way to overcome this artificial restriction.
