Now that Fantastic Friday 2 has passed, a complete list of winners has been posted on iPod touch Fans. Over 1600 entered, double the amount that entered last time, and 195 lucky winners are walking away with a promo code. With this code, the winners can redeem a free copy of whichever application they have won through iTunes. Congratulations to all the winners!

For those that didn’t win, don’t frown. Fantastic Friday 3 will likely be rolled out during June, where you’ll have another chance at winning some of the top applications available on the App Store. It’s all thanks to the developers that sponsor the giveaways. Thanks to them, we’re able to offer up some of the top applications in the App Store such as iShoot, Ocarina and Mafia LIVE!

To redeem a promo code in iTunes, you’ll want to head to the iTunes Store and click on Redeem. If you’re a winner that is living outside of the United States you’ll find that most codes will not redeem for you. Thankfully, there’s a quick way to create a free U.S. iTunes Store account. Once you create this account, you will be able to redeem promo codes normally.

100 million 8 gigabit NAND flash chips have been placed on Apple’s order form for 2009. This is almost double the amount that Apple ordered last year. And June is just around the corner, hinting at a new release.

Apple fans can expect the probable release of the 3rd gen iPhone, with a 3.2 MP camera, video recording capabilities, a new textured back and multi-core processor. That is - if all the rumors are true!

Because we haven’t done a lot of coverage of 3.0 here at HTiT, I’ve taken a few screenshots of my iPod to show you what’s coming up. You’ll probably have seen these features before though, as some aren’t exactly new. But for those who haven’t, click “Read More” to see the images.

Skype has released their official application for the iPhone and iPod touch. Skype is a very popular voice-over-IP (VOIP) and instant messaging application that allows you to make phone calls over the internet. Calls can be made to other Skype users or to those with regular landline phones.

For Canadians, like myself, the release of this application is a letdown. That’s because Skype has not released this application on the Canadian iTunes App Store. None-the-less, it’s not too difficult to do a search on how to create a free U.S. iTunes Store account and you’re good to go.

Many users, mainly using the iPod touch 2G, have been reporting that this application crashes upon use. If you’re jailbroken, there’s a solution out there for you. From Cydia, update the package called Mobile Substrate. Once updated, the Skype application shouldn’t crash anymore. That’s just a temporary fix: Skype will likely release an official update if it turns out to be a bug.

Compatible with:

  • iPhone (voice & IM)
  • iPhone 3G (voice &  IM)
  • iPod touch 2G (voice & IM)
  • iPod touch 1G (IM only)

You can get this application for free here. [iTunes link]

The agreement license for Apple’s developer program, Developer Connection, saw an update today that took a hit on something Apple (excluding our good friend Woz) has always been against: jailbreaking. According to ArsTechnica, who received a copy of the updated agreement, it mentions the following details:

(e)You will not, through use of the Apple Software, services or otherwise, create any Application or other program that would disable, hack or otherwise interfere with the Security Solution, or any security, digital signing, digital rights management, verification or authentication mechanisms implemented in or by the iPhone operating system software, iPod touch operating system software, this Apple Software, any services or other Apple software or technology, or enable others to do so; and

(f) Applications developed using the Apple Software may only be distributed if selected by Apple (in its sole discretion) for distribution via the App Store or for limited distribution on Registered Devices (ad hoc distribution) as contemplated in this Agreement.

In an on-going discussion at iPod touch Fans, user SkylarEC had some good points. Skylar, a member of Apple’s developer program himself, posted his opinion on what this update means:

That only states three things:

  • An developer can not use Apple software to create jailbreaking utilities/tools.
  • A developer may not use Apple software to create code signing utilities (such as ldid).
  • A developer can not distribute iPhone/iPod touch applications created with Apple software via any other means but Apple themselves.

GCC is not Apple software, so I will continue to compile [jailbroken] apps using it. If Apple wants to complain about developing on OS X, then I will simply plug in my Linux machine that has the complete working/patched/upgraded toolchain on it and tell Apple I used that to develop.

“Honestly,” added Skylar, “this is nothing to really worry about.”

UPDATE: According to TUAW, this information has been in the agreement since October 2008 and isn’t anything new.

It’s simple to enter: leave a post on the official contest thread on iPod touch Fans, and you’re entered!

It’s hard to believe that we’re approaching 1 year since WWDC 08. It was an event that introduced us to the 3G iPhone, Firmware 2.0, App Store, and many other cool things. And here we are already, marking our calendars for the 2009 conference. Scheduled for June 8th to 12th, it’ll likely be another sold-out event - so get your tickets now. In fact, purchasing your tickets before April 24th saves you $300 off the normal $1595 ticket price.

WWDC 09 promises to be another exciting conference, but the big question is: will Steve Jobs be there? He’s missed the last two Apple events on a medical leave of absence. And another exciting thing to look forward to: will be see any new gadgets or other products to look forward to? Keep reading for our answers to those questions.

The iPod of the future. Meet iBangle:

[via iPod touch Fans]

by Abcmsaj on 24 Mar 2009

It’s a fact: The gadget obsessed nerds (all of us) need protection in our lives to keep our gizmos in pristine condition, whether they’re your pride and joy, or you’re looking to sell them on in the future. iPods have cases. Hundreds upon hundreds of protective cases in leather, plastic, lint-free cloth - Even wood and metal (if you’re into that kind of stuff.)

I myself have loads of cases for both my Touches, in order to find the perfect case for your device to match your needs. But in this review, we’re going to break the boundaries of “iPod Touch” and move into the world of laptops. Because laptops need lovin’ too! I have an aluminum Macbook, and if it chips, scratches or scars in anyway - What a waste of money…

So I’ve been thinking - What do laptops have? Cases… yeah, but they’re for transporting and traveling places. What about when I’m using it? So for you frequent laptop users, I’ve got a few good products coming up this week - And here’s the first of them.

The “Haptique” is made of ABS plastic hardshell, and is finished with a “soft-touch coating.” It’s made by a company called Uniea, who are a tech-savvy company whose warehouse is based in Hong Kong, but their design team is in the USA. (Uniea stands for Universal Electronic Accessories, and that’s exactly what they deliver!)

Read the review of my Haptique case across the break.
