It is a software modification and is reversible unless something goes wrong. That being said, if you are concerned about voiding your warranty it may be better to avoid any forms of modifications

Anyone will get an iPod Touch on the day it release? I hope Apple will not do anything to stop people modifying the iPod Touch.

Apple has said in the past (atleast for other iPod’s) that installing things like iPod linux on it does not void the warranty.
Apple said that they will not intentionally prevent people from installing native apps on the touch and iphone. They do say that they will not test software updates with home made apps.
Can anyone point to the proper restore image?

I haven’t been able to get this to work yet…
I assume no one has an iPod Touch yet. I expect the iPhone jailbreak program to work fine, since it is based on the mechanism that iTunes uses to talk to the iPhone, which should be the same for the Touch. The restore image for the touch will be available once the touch is — it will be the same one that iTunes uses if it needs to restore the touch.
The thing I’m worried about is in the system preferences (settings). The preference app won’t know about any of these applications you’ve added so you won’t be able to set up email etc. I suppose you could install the preferences app from the iPhone and the phone preferences might not be a problem since there’s no phone hardware. People might need to modify the iPhone or iPod preferences app in some way though, and that would be harder.
I’m attempting to use independance to jailbreak my iPod Touch right now, Doesnt seem to be working. Been sitting on waiting for jailbreak for a while now. Gonna reset it here momentarily.
Good news, I’ve managed to crash it pretty well a couple times and it always restores through itunes.
Same here. I hit jailbreak in Independence and waited about 15 minutes, it was still sitting there. Reset it and iTunes opened and said it was in recovery mode. Anyone know how to get OUT of recovery mode?
you’ll have to perform a full recover in itunes.
Do not try this yet, iNdependence hangs and does not complete the operation — you won’t permanently damage your touch, but you will have to restore it from itunes.
This sucks. I tried it with my ipod Touch 16GB and it works wonderfully, but then when I sync My iPod to the iTunes it doesnt anymore work. I think iTunes takes the files off there somehow.
That’s what I ended up doing and right now I’m not gonna sync all my stuff back for a bit ’til the jailbreaking gets figured out. I doubt it will take all too long.

I think we need a new firmware link. The one that’s provided gives you 3A101a, but my Touch has 3A100a, which gives me an “unknown firmware” when using iNdependence. iTunes says there’s no new firmware to install, so I can’t bump the Touch up to the newer one. Suggestions?

There hasn’t been a new version of iNdependence since yesterday, and it’s already been proven not to work. I submitted a ticket with the programmer to ask if he plans to support the Touch.
I’m kind of curious how people are testing this on an iPod THAT ISN’T AVAILABLE UNTIL THE END OF THIS MONTH

Went to the apple store in SF and got mine on the 13th. Man I can’t wait for this thing to get hacked.
Just got my iPod Touch at the Palo Alto Apple store on University avenue. The iPhone dev team is on the iPod touch now, and there should be a jailbreak update shortly. I have already seen a iPod Touch w/ Mail.app installed this morning, so I know it’s possible.
Picked up mine yesterday as well.
Going to try the jailbreak (and installing 3rd party apps now)
How do you reverse or get it back to factory settings?
I want to make sure that I can retain the warranty even after doing this.

I have firmware 3A100a … why doesn’t it see any updates to the 3A101a firmware that other people are reporting?
Mine shows up as firmware version 3A100a, other people are showing 3A101a …why doesn’t iTunes show any updates then?

xxdesmus: no idea, but if you choose the “Restore” option in iTunes, it’ll get the new one. Not that it does much to Jailbreak it (yet).

The Ipod touch will be hacked soon enough. I think in a bout 1-3 weeks. Its just like the PSP, you just have to give the developers some time, and BAM. You’ll have Google Maps before you know it.

ok, using the iphone jailbreak method i couldnt get my touch to go into restore mode so i tried using independence and got no where…at first. I got the thing to go into restore mode but…thats it. tried appinstaller, nothing it just sat there…bummer.

I tried to jailbreak my new ipod touch and it doesn’t work.. indepedence crashed! The status in indepedence was: disconnected to the iphone..but my ipod was connected! I’ll try one more time but I’m very disapointed..i bought that iphone also for the iPhone apps! please help me!^^

hi guys, I just try the jailbreak and its crashed, I try to restore with itune and it make me error -18, I want to try to restore it with “iPod1,1_1.1.1_3A110a_Restore.ipsw” but where I put this file? If we have to open the dmg file, what’s the password to open it?

i jailbroke my ipod but now when i plug it into my computer itunes says that it has 300mb of space and that they are all used up, i use windows vista. HELP!!!!

doing this does not void the warranty, it only voids the warranty if the jailbreak is what caused the iPod to fail
I install jaibreak on my ipodtouch and it works fine, but when i decided to restore it again using the itunes it got an unknown error (-6) please advise if there is anyway to restore my ipod touch? I just got it for 2days whew.

Had to take the original back to Apple Store and INSIST on a return cause i had upgraded to 1.1.2 and couldnt downgrade. But the new IPT was native 1.1.1. Followed the directions and after the upgrade to 1.1.2 there was Installer just like promised. COOL COOL COOL.
still cannot figure out how to sftp into my IPT. Am using CyberDuck. I enter the IP address I find in Settings/WiFi/Little Blue Button. Port is set to 22. Could it be the wifi modem i am connected to doesnt allow me to feed back in?
I jail breaked my Ipod and everything was pretty sweet. It would freeze every so often but the Ipod restarts itself automatically. However, i just downloaded the new V 1.1.3 patch. This patch deletes all the Jailbreaked programs and the installer. When i tried rejailbreaking, it wouldnt work. I dont know if its just me, but just to warn you guys, dont get the patch if u want to jailbreak.

you got to first downgrade your ipod to 1.1.1 where as it starts with 1.1.2 for new buyers.
to downgrade, open itunes and then SHIFT CLICK restore. then browse ur computer for the firmware. You have to google ipod touch firmware 1.1.1 to find it.
once its 1.1.1, go to jailbreakme.com and install app snap where itll crash browser and it will restart. From there, install BSD Systems and OPEN SSH then ur good to go.

Why does page turn blank when i install?
This doesn’t work on my iPod touch, which I just got yesterday (Christmas). I need to downgrade 1.1.1 but I have yet to find it. But as is, it sees a tiff file and that’s the end of it. It doesn’t crash Safari, it doesn’t download anything, and it doesn’t make the iPod go to slide to unlock. Still working on it.

there like almost the same but the second one is better and it looks like alot but most likely 10 min max it took me like 5 min on a mac
I have tried numerous ways to get my ipod jailbroken and none work. I do not know what is wrong with it. At first, i thought i was doing something wrong but, after trying it numerous times, I have decided that it’t not me. Maybe it is Apple? Maybe they figured out what people were doing and fixed the new touches so you can’t jailbreak them. I don’t know but, i wanted to jailbreak it and now im disappointed…
Anyone know how to fix my problem?

If you guys just wait until febuary apple will release programs that don’t viod the warrenty and are actual apps not web apps. They come out in febuary (talked to apple store many times)

you CAN jailbrake 1.1.2, i have my ipod jailbroken and it works perfect!
) the 1.1.2 is the latest so you update to 1.1.2;
all you gotta do is downgrade your ipod 1.1.2 to 1.1.1, to do this you download this file => http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V7H8X2QQ
after downloading this you go into itunes; hold shift and press ’search for update’, you select the file you just downloaded and let itunes do it’s job.
now you have 1.1.1, you go (with you ipod, safari) to http://www.jailbreakme.com,
you click ‘install appsnapp’; and then your ipod will reboot, just let him do his thing, after he reboots, you slide to unlock and click on the new icon (installer)
here you click tweaks 1.1.1, and dowload oktoprep.
after the download, you go back into itunes and search for update (don’t hold shift anymore
after updating, you’ll see that the icon installer is gone…
but don’t wory, we’ll make it come back
just go to http://rapidshare.com/files/71626429/1.1.2_Jailbreak.rar.html and download this file; after downloading; extract the file into a new folder you will create. Now go into that new folder and click windows.bat; let the pc do it’s job again, and you’ve got your ipod jailbroken!
now you see on your ipod the icon installer again; so go download what you want!

If you upgraded to 1.1.3 without knowing that you would lose your apps then follow the following instructions to reset it to 1.1.1.
1. turn it off (Hold sleep then move red slider)
2. connect to USB and run iTunes
3. press both Sleep and Home buttons for 10 seconds
4. release Sleep and keep pressing Home for another 10 seconds then release
5. iTunes will recognize iPod in restore mode but THIS TIME you can restore to 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 without “uknown error”.
6. Shift-Click on restore
7. Select the 1.1.1 software let iTunes restore to 1.1.1

My ipod errors out every time i try to restore it to a version other than the 1.1.3 version. I’ve tried every method on this board but it fails every time.
hey guys i have an EMERGENCY i jailbreaked my ipod and everything worked fine i even installed some apllicaciontes into it,but my itunes recognized it had only 300mbs and not 16gb! so i reset it by pressing the button at the top not the apple is there and it wont go away! what can i do ?????????????????????
